Anthony Carey, Lord Falkland

Anthony Carey (Cary), 5th Viscount Falkland was buried in Westminster Abbey on 28th May 1694 but the location is not given in the burial register and he has no monument or marker. He was born at Farley Castle, Somerset 15th February 1656, only son of Henry, 4th Viscount Falkland and his wife Rachel (Hungerford). Educated at Winchester he became Treasurer to the Navy 1681-1689 and was First Lord of the Admiralty, member of William III's Privy Council and a Member of Parliament. In 1663 he succeeded his father. His wife was Rebecca daughter of Sir Rowland Lytton but they had no surviving children. In 1694 he was committed to the Tower of London on a charge of peculation (embezzlement). He died of smallpox. His wife was buried in St Paul's cathedral. A second cousin Lucius succeeded him in the title.
