Panel discussion: What is democracy for?

Date Time Location Price
Tuesday, 20th October 20266:30pm - 8:30pmThe Nave Free (booking required)

Join Westminster Abbey Institute to explore how those who serve in public life can renew enduring democratic values of freedom, compromise and trust.

As the UK’s democracy faces the challenges of AI, the impact of social media, and the future of the voting system in an often-divided society, hear insights from our panel of experts. Chaired by Mark Easton, the BBC’s Home Editor 2004-2025, unpack how democratic values have stood the test of time and whether moral leadership still matters in an era of performative outrage. How can institutions enable conversations to continue, safeguarding space for disagreement and dialogue?

As the UK’s democracy continues to evolve, Westminster Abbey Institute invites you to the place where it began. Join the conversation this Autumn about democracy’s past, present, and future, in our programme of events: The Long Story of Democracy.

Westminster Abbey Institute

Westminster Abbey Institute aims to nurture and revitalise moral and spiritual values in public life and service. It seeks to replenish and sustain public servants of all faiths and none, and to celebrate and animate public service as a force for good. The Institute draws on Westminster Abbey’s resources of spirituality and theological learning, rooted in its daily worshipping life and broader Christian tradition, to convene discussion, nourish reflection and inspire regeneration.
