Stephen Crespion

The Reverend Stephen Crespion and his sister Elizabeth were buried in the south cloister of Westminster Abbey on 2nd December 1711 and 23 June 1681 respectively. They have no grave inscriptions.They were children of Germain Crespion of St Giles in the Fields parish in London and his wife Cornelia, edlest daughter of Stephen Nau, both evidently French emigrants. Elizabeth died unmarried aged about 30. Stephen was a King's Scholar at Westminster School and went on to Christ Church, Oxford. In 1673 he became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal and in 1675 Confessor to the Royal Household. He was later prebendary of Bristol. From 1673 he was a Minor Canon of Westminster and Precentor, or Chanter, from 1683. His first wife Margaret was buried in the south cloister on 22nd March 1688 and his second Mary on 1st January 1759 aged 96 (her sister was Catherine Orris of Truro). She leased a house on the north side of the Abbey. Stephen had four children baptised at the Abbey but nearly all died young and were buried in the south cloister - Elizabeth, Stephen, Margaret and Mary (1694-1715).
