Charles Walter Congreve

In the south cloister of Westminster Abbey is the grave of Charles Walter Congreve, archdeacon of Armagh. He was a son of John Congreve of Congreve in Staffordshire and his wife Abigail (Harwood) and was a great-nephew of the dramatist William Congreve. Educated at Oxford he was installed at Armagh in 1738 and in 1746 became Vicar General of that diocese. He died unmarried. (The name of Pierre Le Courayer, French divine, was later added to the base of this grave).

The inscription to Charles reads:

Here lies interr'd Charles Walter Congreve, Archdeacon of Armagh. Pious, charitable & virtuous he departed this life June the 7, 1777 in the seventieth year of his age.
