Edward Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury
Politician
Edward Talbot, 8th Earl of Shrewsbury, was buried in St Edmund's chapel in Westminster Abbey. His wife Jane erected a large monument for him.

Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 28th June 1838, aged 19. The ceremony took five hours and suffered from a lack of rehearsal.
Alexandrina Victoria was the only child of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent (a son of George III) and his wife Princess Victoria.

William III
William III and Mary II were crowned as joint monarchs in the Abbey on 11th April 1689 – the first time this had happened in England. Their wax effigies are on display.
William was the only child of William II, Prince of Orange and Princess Mary, eldest daughter of Charles I of England.

Edward VI
Edward succeeded his father when he was just 9 years old and was crowned in the Abbey on 20th February 1547. He died in 1553.
He was a well-educated but sickly child.

James Oswald

James Oswald was buried in the north aisle of the nave in 1769. A small rectangular brass with a decorated border now covers his grave.
Their only child was James Townsend Oswald, who succeeded his father as M.P.

Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Writer and Poet
The poet Robert Browning is buried in Poets' Corner. His wife, poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, is buried in Florence, but is memorialised in Westminster Abbey.
She was a child of Edward Barrett and was an invalid when Robert began a correspondence with her which led to a secret engagement and later marriage.

Winifred, Marchioness of Winchester
In the chapel of St Nicholas in Westminster Abbey is a large monument to Winifred, Marchioness of Winchester. It is attributed to sculptor Garrett Johnson.
There is also a figure of a baby girl on a small sarcophagus, being a child who obviously died in infancy.

A statue to this modern martyr, Esther John, was unveiled in July 1998 and stands above the west entrance to Westminster Abbey.
Her Life Esther John was born Qamar Zia, on 14th October 1929, one of seven children.

Alexander, James and William Johnstone
Soldier
Alexander, Sir James and William Johnstone, sons of Sir James Johnstone of Scotland, are buried in the south cloister of the Abbey.
His illegitimate children were Ann, wife of Mr Scott, and James Murray Johnstone.

Lady Elizabeth & Joseph Nightingale
In St Michael’s chapel, off the north transept of Westminster Abbey, is a remarkable monument, by L.F. Roubiliac, commemorating Lady Elizabeth Nightingale and her husband Joseph.
This child, also called Elizabeth, survived and later married Wilmot Vaughan, 1st Earl of Lisburne and died (also in childbirth) in 1755.

On the south wall of St Margaret's church Westminster is a cartouche to Nicholas Dering (or Dearing). The inscription is in Latin and English.

Stephen Hawking

The ashes of eminent physicist Professor Stephen Hawking were interred in the nave of Westminster Abbey near Newton.
His first wife Jane and two of his children, Tim and Lucy, laid flowers.
