Richard II portrait to go on loan to British Museum in 2012

Westminster Abbey’s portrait of Richard II is back in place at the west end of the nave after a conservation assessment carried out by Marie-Louise Sauerberg of Cambridge University’s Hamilton Kerr Institute and funded by the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Art Conservation Programme.

Bishop of Lincoln Consecrated at Westminster Abbey

The Right Reverend Christopher Lowson was ordained and consecrated as Bishop of Lincoln at a Eucharist at Westminster Abbey on 21st September 2011. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr Rowan Williams, presided at the service.

George VI
The coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth was held at Westminster Abbey on 12th May 1937. They married at the Abbey on 26th April 1923.

Artist, Writer, Soldier, Statesman and Historian
Sir Winston Churchill is not buried in Westminster Abbey but just inside, near the grave of the Unknown Warrior, is a green marble memorial stone.

The ashes of Stephen Dykes Bower, Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey from 1951-1973, are buried in the Islip chapel.

John Williams
Dean and Philanthropist
Dr John Williams was Dean of Westminster from 1620-1644. He has no monument in the Abbey and he is buried at Llandegai in his native Wales.

William Congreve
Writer and Playwright
William Congreve, dramatist, has a memorial near his grave in the south aisle of the nave. The marble monument is by sculptor Francis Bird.

Artist
John Richard Clayton and Alfred Bell designed several stained glass windows for Westminster Abbey and St Margaret's Church Westminster. Clayton also designed some memorials.
