  A memorial stone to Gerard Manley Hopkins, poet, was unveiled on 8th December 1975 in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey by the Duke of Norfolk.

  About Gerard Manley Hopkins He was born on 28th July 1844 at Stratford in Essex, a child of Manley Hopkins and his wife Catherine (Smith).

  In the north ambulatory is a tablet to Juliana Crewe. On the other side is a marble mural monument to Lady Jane Crewe.

  Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë are commemorated in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. Their stone tablet of Huddlestone stone was given by the Brontë Society.

  Just inside the west door of Westminster Abbey, at the base of a pillar is a memorial to the Earl and Countess Mountbatten of Burma.

  Poet

  In Poets' Corner is a monument to poet Abraham Cowley. It consists of an oval panel on a pedestal with a large wreathed urn above.

  He died at Chertsey on 28th July 1667 and had a lavish funeral in the Abbey.

  Westminster Abbey’s Choir sang for Pope Benedict XVI, with the Cappella Musicale Pontificia ‘Sistina’, the Sistine Chapel Choir, at the Papal Mass marking the Solemnity of St Peter and St Paul in St Peter’s Basilica, Rome, on Friday 29th June, a historic occasion of great significance for Anglican-Catholic relations.

• Auction house steps in to help Abbey

  A major auction house is stepping in to help raise funds for the preservation of the Westminster Abbey, its collections, and its music foundation which are all at risk because of the coronavirus pandemic.

  Priest/Minister, Statesman and Abolitionist

  William Wilberforce, MP, who took up the cause for the abolition of slavery was buried in the north transept. Samuel was Dean of Westminster and Basil was Archdeacon.

• Queen Anne

  Anne was crowned in the Abbey on 23rd April 1702. She is buried with her husband Prince George of Denmark in a vault in the Lady Chapel.

  Marriage She married Prince George of Denmark (1653-1708), youngest son of Frederick III, King of Denmark and his wife Sophia, at Whitehall on 28th July 1683.

  Abraham Lincoln’s moral purpose and his historical significance were examined in a lecture in St Margaret’s Church on Tuesday 7th July given by Professor Richard Carwardine, Rhodes Professor of American History at St. Catherine's College, Oxford as part of an evening of special events to mark the bicentenary of Lincoln’s birth.
