  The King and Queen attended a Service of Thanksgiving to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day at Westminster Abbey on Thursday 8th May. VE Day was the public holiday that marked the formal end of the Second World War in Europe.

  Mary Tudor was the daughter of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon. She was crowned in the Abbey on 1st October 1553 and lies buried with Elizabeth I.

  The ashes of Sir Henry Irving, actor, lie in Poets' Corner. John Henry Brodribb (1838-1905) assumed the surname of Irving by royal licence in 1889.

  A small stone with a simple inscription marks the grave of Charles Dickens, famous English novelist, in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey.

  Elizabeth Woodville is buried with her husband King Edward IV at St George's chapel, Windsor, but she took Sanctuary at Westminster Abbey on two occasions.

  The memorial window to Sir William Siemens was taken down in 1926 so that a series of windows depicting kings and abbots could be erected.

  In the north choir aisle is a memorial to surgeon Lord Lister, pioneer of antiseptic treatment. The white marble roundel shows a profile of Lister.

  Philanthropist

  Near the west door in the nave is the simple gravestone of Angela Burdett-Coutts, philanthropist. She applied her fortune to many charities.

  Actor

  On the west wall of Poets' Corner is a monument to the famous actor David Garrick, not far from his grave. By H. Webber.

• Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother

  Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was married and crowned in the Abbey and had her funeral here in 2002.

• Edward VI

  Edward succeeded his father when he was just 9 years old and was crowned in the Abbey on 20th February 1547. He died in 1553.
