• Henry VI

  Henry VI was crowned in Westminster Abbey in 1429 aged 8. He has a modern statue in the Lady Chapel.

• Anne of Cleves, 4th wife of Henry VIII

  Mary I ordered Anne of Cleves’ burial in the Abbey. She lies on the south side of the High Altar, her monument showing her initials.

• Richard Hakluyt

  Writer, Scientist and Priest/Minister

  Richard Hakluyt, called 'the father of modern geographers', was buried in November 1616, but the place of his burial was not noted in the register.

• Elizabeth Claypole

  Elizabeth Claypole, favourite daughter of Oliver Cromwell, is buried in Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey. A small stone marks her burial place.

  Sir Charles Lyell, the distinguished geologist, was buried in the north aisle of the nave. He was the eldest son of Charles and Frances.

  Near the west door in the nave is the simple gravestone of Angela Burdett-Coutts, philanthropist. She applied her fortune to many charities.

  In Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey is a marble statue of Joseph Addison, poet and essayist, by the sculptor Sir Richard Westmacott, erected in 1809.

• Sir Francis & Anne Cottington

  Francis, Baron Cottington of Hanworth, and his wife, have monuments in the chapel of St Paul. He was twice ambassador to Spain.

  Henry was the eldest son of Empress Matilda. He and his queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, were crowned in Westminster Abbey on Sunday 19th December 1154.

• George I

  George I was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 20th October 1714. He could not speak much English and the ceremonies were mostly conducted in Latin.

• Stephen

  Stephen was crowned in the Abbey in December 1135. He promised to all Englishmen "all the liberties and good laws" which they had enjoyed under his predecessors.

• Matilda (Maud) wife of Henry I

  The marriage of Matilda of Scotland to King Henry I in 1100 united the Saxon and Norman lines. She is buried near the Shrine of St Edward in Westminster Abbey but has no tomb or memorial.
