    Charles Ignatius Sancho, who escaped from a background of slavery and rose to distinction in Georgian London, has been honoured with a new memorial.

    In St Faith's chapel is a brass wall plaque for Charles Pettit McIlvaine, bishop of Ohio. His body lay for four days in the chapel.

    The Reverend Dr Charles Hickman, bishop of Derry (Londonderry), was buried in the south aisle of the nave but he has no monument or gravestone.

    On the south wall of St Margaret's church Westminster is an oval tablet to former Rector and Canon of Westminster Charles Hugh Egerton Smyth.

    Charles Robert Darwin, naturalist, is buried in the north aisle of the nave of Westminster Abbey, not far from Sir Isaac Newton. His memorial is by J.E. Boehm.

    The ashes of William Bishop were buried in the west cloister. He held the post of Clerk of Works at the Abbey from 1928-1955.

    Priest/Minister

    The Reverend Charles Wellington Furse, Canon and Archdeacon, is buried in the east cloister. He was a son of Charles William Johnson of Great Torrington.

  • Charles Agar, Earl of Normanton

    Priest/Minister and Philanthropist

    Charles Agar, Earl of Normanton and his wife Jane are buried in the north transept. A monument to him was erected in the north choir.

  • Charles Dickens

    Writer and Novelist

    A small stone with a simple inscription marks the grave of Charles Dickens, famous English novelist, in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey.

  • Charles Marsh

    In east cloister, near the gates, is the grave of Charles Marsh, a clerk in the War Office and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

  • Charles I

    Charles I was the second son of James I and was born on 19th November 1600. He was crowned in Westminster Abbey in February 1626.
