  • Sir John Denham

    Poet

    Sir John Denham, poet, was buried on 23rd March 1669 in Poets' Corner, near Chaucer's tomb. He has no monument and had no inscribed gravestone.

    Sir John Burland, judge, was buried in the south choir aisle of Westminster Abbey. His monument was moved to the triforium and can be seen there.

    In the nave is a memorial to Sir John [Jean] Chardin, court jeweller to Charles II. By sculptor Henry Cheere.

    Sir John Hawkins, writer, is buried in the north cloister of Westminster Abbey. His gravestone has been re-cut. He was born on 29th March 1719.

  • Sir John Harpedon

    Soldier

    Sir John Harpedon, knight, who died in 1438, has a brass in the north ambulatory. He was originally buried in St John the Evangelist's chapel.

    Sir John Puckering, Speaker of the House of Commons, is buried in St Paul's chapel. His large monument shows effigies of him and his wife.

    Sir John Shorditch was buried in St Benedict's chapel in 1345. His grave may be that which is now beneath Dr William Bill’s tomb chest.

    In the north transept is an over life-size statue, by Sir Francis Chantrey, in memory of Sir John Malcolm (1769-1833), soldier and statesman.

    Rear Admiral Sir John Jennings was buried in the centre part of the north transept, but his gravestone inscription has now worn away.

    Sir John Cutler 1607-1693 was buried in the middle chancel of St Margaret's on 28th April 1693. But he has no monument or surviving gravestone.

    Sir John Golofre was buried by order of Richard II in the south ambulatory. His cracked gravestone, not far from the king's tomb, still exists.

    Sir John Basil Zochonis, industrialist, was a generous donor to the Westminster Abbey restoration appeal and he has a small window in the Lady Chapel.

    In the chapel of the Order of the Bath there is an enamelled stall plate for Sir John Alexander Macdonald, first Prime Minister of Canada.

    The famous Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin has a memorial in St John the Evangelist's chapel in Westminster Abbey.
