• Abbey celebrates 300th anniversary of Westminster Hospital

  A service of thanksgiving to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Westminster Hospital was held at Westminster Abbey at Noon on Thursday 23rd May 2019.

• Anne (Stanhope), Duchess of Somerset & Jane Seymour

  Anne Stanhope, Duchess of Somerset is buried in St Nicholas' chapel. In the chapel of St Edmund is a monument to her daughter Lady Jane.

  A window was erected in the nave of Westminster Abbey in 1868 to commemorate the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Designed by Norman Shaw.

  Sir Robert Moray, mathematician, chemist and a founder and first President of the Royal Society, was buried in the centre part of the south transept.

  In the north choir aisle is a memorial statue to Sir (Thomas) Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore. It is a seated white marble life-sized figure.

  The Reverend Dr Samuel Goodenough is buried in the north cloister. He lies near the grave of Dr William Markham, Head Master of Westminster School.

• William Whitfield Dakins

  Priest/Minister

  William Whitfield Dakins, minor canon of Westminster, is buried in the south cloister. The inscription was re-cut in 1950 but is now rather worn.

  John Ernest Grabe, biblical scholar, has a monument in the south transept. On the west wall, it shows his figure dressed in gown and bands.

• Queen Anne

  Anne was crowned in the Abbey on 23rd April 1702. She is buried with her husband Prince George of Denmark in a vault in the Lady Chapel.

  In the north-west tower chapel is a statue to Captain James Montagu. A life size figure of James in uniform stands on a pedestal flanked by two lions.

  Sir Oliver Lambert or Lambart, politician, was buried in Westminster Abbey but the register just gives the location as "in the monuments".

• James I and Anne of Denmark

  James I and Anne of Denmark are both buried in Westminster Abbey. But neither has a monument. Their funeral effigies still remain in the Abbey collection.

  Near the west door in the nave is the simple gravestone of Angela Burdett-Coutts, philanthropist. She applied her fortune to many charities.

  Musician and Composer

  James Turle was Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey from 1831-1882. He has a memorial tablet in the cloisters and a memorial window in the Abbey but is not buried here.

• Frances Teresa Stuart, Duchess of Richmond

  A wax effigy of Frances Teresa (Stuart), Duchess of Richmond and Lennox, with her pet parrot, can be seen in the triforium galleries at Westminster Abbey.

  Politician and Soldier

  Thomas Cecil, Earl of Exeter, his first wife, two daughters and his son are buried in a vault in St John the Baptist's chapel.

• George and Nicholas Monck

  Priest/Minister, Soldier and Sailor

  General George Monck and his brother NIcholas are both buried in Westminster Abbey. The General's funeral armour is on display.

  In Henry VII's chapel at Westminster Abbey there is a monument to John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham. The wax effigies of his wife Catherine and two sons can be seen in the triforium

• Anthony & William Horneck

  Priest/Minister, Soldier and Engineer

  Dr Anthony Horneck, clergyman, is buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey, together with his wife, daughter Elizabeth and son William.
