John Croft

In the north cloister of Westminster Abbey is the gravestone of John Croft and his wife Sarah. The inscription reads:

Here lie the remains of John Croft Esqr. [Esquire] Clerk of the Journals and Engrossments of the House of Lords who died January 28 1797 aged 70 years. Also of Sarah Croft his wife who died 1st Nover. 1798 aged 82 years

He lived in College Street, just at the back of the Abbey (which is maybe why he was buried here) and newspapers of the day said he had been in his post for more than forty years. In his will he mentions land at Oswestry, his sister in law Anne Jones and brother Nicholas Croft and his daughters. It would appear John had no children.
