James Lupton

James Lupton, clergyman of Westminster Abbey, is buried in the west cloister of the Abbey. The stone was re-cut in 1958 and reads:

Here rest the remains of James Lupton M.A. forty-four years Minor Canon of this Collegiate Church and of St Paul's Cathedral who departed this life on the 21st December 1873 in the seventy-fourth year of his age.

He was a son of James Lupton of York and after education at Christ Church, Oxford he became vicar of Blackbourton in that county and then rector of St Michael's, Queenhithe in London. He served at the Abbey and St Paul's from 1829-1873. He married Anne daughter of Thomas and Temperance Dry. Two of their daughters (who were baptised at St Michael's) were married in the Abbey. Sarah, aged 22, married Edward May, surgeon, son of William and Lucretia (Costall), on 14th May 1861 and Emma (born 1841) married his brother John May, merchant, on 28th May 1863. Their other children were Anne and Frederick.
