Earl of Carlisle Children

Several children of the Howard family, Earls of Carlisle, are buried in St John the Baptist's chapel in Westminster Abbey. Their names are inscribed on a modern black marble stone.

Charles Howard, 3rd son of Charles 1st Earl of Carlisle and his wife Anne (daughter of Edward 1st Lord Howard of Escrick) was born in 1668 and died in 1670. Daughter Katherine was born in 1662 and died unmarried in March 1682. Son Frederick was born at Copenhagen in 1664 and was killed during the siege of Luxembourg in 1684, unmarried. (The Earl himself is buried at York Minster).

Anne Howard eldest daughter of Edward, 2nd Earl of Carlisle and his wife Elizabeth (Uvedale) was born in 1668 and died unmarried in 1685. Mary Howard died unmarried in 1694.

Buried just outside the chapel, and not mentioned on the stone, is William third son of the 2nd Earl of Carlisle buried on 24th July 1701. He was a Member of Parliament for Carlisle and knight of the shire for Northumberland and died unmarried.
