Dame Katherine Byron

Dame Katherine Byron was buried in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey on 11th February 1676 but the exact location is not known and there is no memorial to her.

She was the daughter of Henry Braine and widow of Sir Thomas Byron (c.1610-1644), Royalist officer. Their two sons, Thomas and John, pre-deceased them. He commanded the Prince of Wales's regiment under the Earl of Northampton in the fight at Hopton Heath in 1643 and fought at Edgehill. Unfortunately he was killed by one of his own men over a pay dispute and was buried in Christ Church cathedral, Oxford. He was the son of Sir John Byron of Newstead in Nottinghamshire and his brother John was 1st Baron Byron.
