Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir to sing at Abbey

The Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir sings at Evensong at the Abbey today, Monday 7th May as the finale of their European tour – a rare opportunity to hear one of Europe’s finest cathedral choirs, and music from the Danish choral tradition including works by Waldemar Åhlén, David Sandstrøm and Carl Nielsen.

James O’Donnell, the Abbey’s Organist and Master of the Choristers said:

I am delighted that this distinguished choir is able to sing a service in Westminster Abbey as part of its present tour. We look forward to hearing some Danish choral music as well as that of other traditions. I trust that our Danish colleagues will enjoy singing in the Abbey and am sure it will be a most memorable occasion.

The choir was founded in 1924 and has 14 adult professional singers and 30 boy choristers - the only representative of the cathedral choir and choir school tradition in Scandinavia. Resident at Copenhagen Cathedral since 1959, the Choir regularly performs at state occasions in Denmark and during royal visits abroad. Under the direction of Ebbe Munk, artistic director and chief conductor since 1991, the Choir has undertaken concerts in leading concert halls, cathedrals and festivals all over the world. Its visit to the Abbey comes at the end of a two-week tour of Spain, Portugal and the UK.

Evensong is at 5.00pm and all are welcome. No tickets are required.

The biggest challenge we face is actually time – getting all our work done alongside the daily routine of the Abbey as a working church, visitor attraction and home to 1,000 years of history.
