Talk: Caxton and the printing press in Westminster

To mark the 550th anniversary of Caxton’s printing press, experts Matthew Payne and Thomas Penn will discuss how Caxton came to set up his press in the precincts of Westminster Abbey. Learn why Westminster proved the ideal environment for his business to flourish and how his network of local relationships led to his success.
About Matthew Payne and Thomas Penn
Matthew Payne is the Keeper of the Muniments at Westminster Abbey.
Thomas Penn is currently working on a life of William Caxton. A historian of the later middle ages and sixteenth century, he is the author of Winter King: The Dawn of Tudor England, and The Brothers York: An English Tragedy. He writes for, among others, the Guardian and London Review of Books, works in publishing and lives in London.

Timings
You are welcome to attend Evensong in Westminster Abbey at 5:00pm before the talk. Doors will open at 6:00pm and the talk will begin at 6:30pm. This will be followed by an audience Q&A from 7:15pm.

This event takes place in St Margaret's Church.
Access and security
Please have your ticket ready to show our staff (either printed or on your mobile phone).
On your arrival, your bag will be searched and we ask you not to bring any large items with you (for example suitcases, large backpacks or folding bicycles) as these will not be allowed inside and we are unable to store them for you.
