An evening with Greg Jenner: Celebrity and memory
Greg Jenner unpacks how celebrity, fame and posthumous glory have shaped who and how we choose to remember.
Amidst the many memorials and graves that fill the nave of the nation's church, Greg Jenner will explore how the reputations of famous people from across the ages have been constructed and contested in both life and death.
Drawing on examples of individuals buried and remembered inside the Abbey, Greg will reflect on the nature of national memory, the evolution of 'necrotourism' and the history of celebrity pilgrimage.
About Greg Jenner
Greg Jenner is a British public historian, author, and broadcaster with a particular interest in communicating history through comedy.
He writes books for adults and kids and is best known as the host and creator of the chart-topping, award-winning BBC historical comedy You’re Dead to Me which pairs up top comedians with expert historians. This talk is inspired by his book Dead Famous (2020) which explores the history of celebrity.
He also worked for 11 years on the smash-hit BBC TV comedy series Horrible Histories.

Timings
You are welcome to attend Evensong in Westminster Abbey at 5:00pm before the talk. Doors will open at 6:15pm and the talk will begin at 6:30pm. This will be followed by an audience Q&A from 7:15pm.

This event will meet by the Great West Door to Westminster Abbey.
