William Craig

The Reverend William Craig was a prebendary at Westminster from 1720-1721 and is buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey, (adjoining the grave of Dame Mary Steele). But his inscription has now worn away. An early 19th century history of the Abbey recorded it as (translated from the Latin):

Here lies William Craig M.A. prebendary of this Church. Died 19 February 1720. Here also lyes the body of Mary Craig, widow of the above mentioned William Craig, who dyed ye 1st of Janr. 1745 aged 81

The dates are given in Old Style dating and dates of death are respectively 1721 and 1746 in modern dating.

He was a son of the Reverend James Craig and his brother was the Reverend John Craig, famous mathematician. Probably educated in Edinburgh he went on to be tutor to the Duke of Roxburgh, rector of Upway in Dorset and prebendary of Salisbury cathedral. His wife was Mary daughter of Peter de Bert.
