Susan de Vere, Countess of Montgomery

Lady Susan de Vere, Countess of Montgomery, youngest daughter of Edward 17th Earl of Oxford and his first wife Anne Cecil (daughter of William Cecil, Lord Burghley and his wife Mildred), was buried in the chapel of St Nicholas at Westminster Abbey on 1st February 1629. Her grave is not marked and she has no memorial. Susan is depicted as a kneeling figure on the large monument in the Abbey to her mother Anne Countess of Oxford (together with Anne's other daughters Elizabeth and Bridget).

She was born on 26th May 1587 and was the first wife of Sir Philip Herbert, who was created Earl of Montgomery and succeeded as 4th Earl of Pembroke in 1630. They were married at Whitehall on 27th December 1604. Philip held many posts including Lord Chamberlain of the Household, High Steward of Westminster and Constable of Windsor Castle and he was also a Member of Parliament. He was buried in Salisbury cathedral. Their son John Herbert was buried in this chapel in 1659.

Susan's sister, Elizabeth, Countess of Derby, was also buried in this chapel in 1627.
