Sudan memorial

In the north cloister of Westminster Abbey is a memorial tablet to British workers in the Sudan under the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium. The inscription, written by former Dean of Westminster Alan Don, reads:

1898-1955. To commemorate the work of men and women of our race who laboured to serve the people of the Sudan. This tablet was erected 1960. Nisi Dominus frustra

The Latin phrase can be translated "It is in vain without the Lord". It was unveiled by Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on 8th March 1960 and was designed by S.E. Dykes Bower, the Abbey Surveyor. Lord Rugby, who as Sir John Maffey was a previous Governor General of the Sudan, gave the address at the service.
