Sir William Elphinstone

Sir William Elphinstone (Elphinstoun or Elveston) was buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey, near the Library door, on 10th December 1645 but his grave is not marked. He was the youngest son of George Elphinstone of Blythswood and brother of Sir George, Justice-clerk. He was sometime Lord Chief Justice of Scotland and one of the cup bearers to Charles I.

Knighted at Whitehall in 1637 he seems to have been displaced from office in 1641. He left all his estate to Sir David Cunningham "to whom he was deeply indebted" with a small sum to his nephew William, son of James Elphinstone of Woodside.
