Sir William Bassett

Sir William Bassett (or Basset) was buried "within the south door of the monuments" of Westminster Abbey, most likely the south ambulatory, on 24th September 1667. He has no marker or memorial.

He was baptised in January 1627 and was of Beaupre in Glamorgan, south Wales. He was the son of Sir Richard Basset, governor of Cardiff in the Civil War, and his first wife Mary Thomas. In 1665 he married Martha (died 1685), daughter of Sir Hugh Wyndham but they had no children. In 1666 he was knighted and was Member of Parliament for Cardiff and an officer in the Royal Horse Guards. His estate was left to his half brother Richard.
