Sir Clement Clerke

Sir Clement Clerke (or Clark) was buried in the north cloister of Westminster Abbey on 10th December 1693. His wife Sarah had been buried there on 13th November of the same year. No inscription was recorded for them in any guidebooks so the exact location is not known.

He was son of Sir George Clerke of Watford in Northamptonshire and his wife Barbara, daughter of Robert Palmer. The family had been established at Willoughby in Warwickshire since the time of Henry VI. He was appointed Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Charles II in 1661 and was created a Baronet in the same year, as of Launde Abbey in Leicester. Sarah was the heir of George Talbot of Shropshire and in some of the published baronetages she is called Catherine. Their son Sir Talbot succeeded his father. The other sons were Clement, deputy governor of the Isle of Wight who died unmarried, George who married Dorothy Pearse and Thomas who died unmarried.

Sir Clement's great grandson Sir Talbot Clerke, 5th Baronet (son of Sir Talbot the 4th Baronet and Barbara (Gladwin)) died when he was at Westminstesr School and was buried in the north cloister on 25th November 1732. Again, he has no marker.
