Raymond, Count of Provence

In the south choir aisle of Westminster Abbey is a carved and painted shield with the arms of Raymond Berengar, count of Provence (1198-1245). This shows "or, four pales gules" ie. a gold and red vertical design. The shield is hung by straps to projecting heads on the wall, one being a lady. Henry III married his second daughter Eleanor of Provence when she was twelve years old. Her mother was Beatrice, a daughter of the count of Savoy.

These carved shields in the spandrels of the wall arcades are traditionally said to be those of individuals or families who were benefactors to the building of the new Gothic Abbey by Henry III and probably date from the decade 1245-55.
