Nicholas Clagett

Nicholas Clagett, Bishop of Exeter, was buried at St Margaret's Westminster on 11th December 1746. He had died in the parish and according to his own wishes was buried in the place where he died and with as little expense as possible. There is no gravestone or memorial to him. He seems not to have married.

He was baptized in 1686 at Bury St Edmunds, son of the Reverend Nicholas Clagett (died 1727) archdeacon of Sudbury in Suffolk, and his wife Margaret (Prime). His grandfather Nicholas was also a clergyman (died 1662) and his uncle William was a noted preacher. He was educated in Bury and at Cambridge and became rector of Heacham in Norfolk and then Brington in Northamptonshire. In 1722 he was appointed archdeacon of Buckingham and a royal chaplain the following year. Later he was Dean of Rochester and bishop of St David's before being translated to Exeter in 1742. He spent his winters in London. His estate was divided between his unmarried sisters Jane and Margaret and his brother Samuel.
