Michael Hare

In the west cloister of Westminster Abbey is the grave of Michael and Mary Hare. He had a brother John and lived in Millbank street Westminster. Mary was a child of James Merest, assistant clerk in the House of Lords and his second wife Jane (daughter of Charles Batteley who was baptised in the Abbey in 1707).

Mary was baptised in St Margaret's Westminster on 27th June 1748 and married Michael at St Martin in the Fields church in 1770. They had no children. Her mother's sister Charlotte (Fisher) is buried near her. The inscription reads:

Mrs Mary Hare died 9th March 1797 aged 48. Also Michael Hare Esq. husband of the above Mary Hare died 9th November 1807
