Martha Cavendish
In 1967 a seven foot high carved figure of Christ, flanked by figures of St Peter and St Edward the Confessor, was presented by Mrs Sidney Hope in memory of Mrs Martha D. Cavendish of Hove in Sussex. The figures are in teak, lightly gilded, and were carved by Michael Lindsey Clark (1918-1990).
Originally they were set up above the west entrance doors to the nave of Westminster Abbey, facing out to greet visitors (when the west door was the main entrance for tourists). In 1979 they were removed to St Faith's chapel within the Abbey when the new glass doors to the nave were installed.
Since 2002 they have been placed on the wall at the entrance to the cloisters. The figure of St Peter holds a crown and that of St Edward holds a model of the Abbey.
