John Milles

John Milles was buried in the middle part of the nave of Westminster Abbey on 16th June 1815. His gravestone was taken up when the nave floor was re-laid in 1834 but the inscription read:

To the memory of John Milles Esq. third son of Christopher Milles Esq. of Nackington in the county of Kent and brother of Richard Milles Esq. of the above place and of North Elmham in the county of Norfolk who died June 6th 1815 aged 76 years

Only a small lozenge with name and date of death now marks the grave which is near to that of Dean Trench. His mother was Mary (Warner). John and his two brothers Richard and Christopher attended Westminster School. He was a Captain in the East India Company Marine Service. Richard was a Member of Parliament (died 1820) and married Mary Tanner, daughter of a clergyman at Canterbury cathedral, and Christopher was a lawyer and Chief Justice of Senegambia (d.1771 in Madeira). John lived in Park Street, Grosvenor Square and his will was proved by his sister Mary. Most of his estate he bequeathed to his reputed daughter Mary Ann Blackburn.
