John Gavan

John Gavan and his wife Susan are buried in the north cloister of Westminster Abbey but the gravestone inscription is now worn away. It was recorded in an early guidebook to the Abbey:

John Gavan of St Paul's Covent Garden departed this life 21st August 1666 aged 58 years. His flesh interred here contained a Spirit, who by God's mercy and his Saviour's merit, departed in that constant hope, of dust eternally to reign among the just, to live, die well was his whole endeavour, and in a span died to live for ever.

Little is known about him but his brothers were Christopher, William and Thomas. His wife was buried on 9th June 1670. Their sons were John and Thomas and their daughter Anne was the wife of Rice Jones.
