John Carey, Earl of Dover

John Carey, 2nd Earl of Dover, Viscount Rochford and Baron Hunsdon, was buried in the Carey family vault in St John the Baptist's chapel in Westminster Abbey on 1st June 1677. His second wife Lady Abigail Carey, Countess of Dover was buried in the Abbey on 16th February 1688. But neither has a monument or marker. She was the fifth daughter of Sir William Cokayne, merchant and alderman of London and Lord Mayor in 1619, and his wife Mary, daughter of Richard Morris, merchant, who later married Henry, 1st Earl of Dover as his second wife. (William and Mary were buried in St Paul's cathedral). Abigail was baptised at St Peter le Poor church in London on 26th August 1610 and married John there on 2nd December 1630. John was the eldest son of Henry, 4th Baron Hunsdon and Earl of Dover and his wife Judith (Pelham). John's first wife was Dorothy St John, daughter of the 1st Earl of Bolingbroke. Abigail died in Chapel Street, Westminster. Mary, her only surviving child, married William Heveningham of Suffolk, one of the judges of Charles I (she inherited Conisborough Castle in Yorkshire). The earldom of Dover became extinct at John's death but the Barony reverted to his cousin Robert.
