John Battely

John Battely was buried in the south aisle of the nave on 14th June 1729 aged 33 but he has no marker. The grave is in front of the Bovey monument. He was a son of Thomas Battely and grandson of Nicholas. The family came from Suffolk. In 1723 he was appointed Receiver General, Solicitor and Steward of the Courts of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, succeeding his uncle Charles (who married Elizabeth Needham and died in 1722) in the post. His other uncles were Samuel, John (Archdeacon of Canterbury) and the Reverend Nicholas Battely. At the Chapel Royal in Whitehall he married Elizabeth, daughter of Mark Frecker on 9th February 1727. They seem to have had no children.
