James, Lord Cranstoun

James, Lord Cranstoun was buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey on 14th July 1773 aged 70. He seems never to have had an inscribed gravestone and there is no monument to him.

He was the eldest son of William, 5th Lord Cranstoun and his wife Lady Jane Kerr (daughter of the 2nd Marquis of Lothian). His brother William Henry was a captain in the army. In 1727 he succeeded as 6th Earl. He married Sophia Brown (who married secondly Michael Lade). Their son William, 7th Earl, was buried with his father on 6th August 1778 aged 27 and died unmarried. His brother James became the 8th Earl and was also governor of Grenada.
