Hugh Aston

Hugh Aston was buried in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey (possibly in the south walk) on 9th May 1644. His gravestone is no longer readable but it was recorded in an early Abbey guidebook:

Here lieth the body of Hugh Aston Clerk to Her Majesty's robes, he ended this mortal life the eighth of May 1644

He was called servant of Sir Roger Aston (died 1612, Member of Parliament and Master of the King's Great Wardrobe) so there was probably some relationship. He possibly lived near the Abbey so that is why he was buried here. Hugh had nine children baptised in St Margaret's Westminster but his wife's name is not included in the registers. They were Frances 1612, Walter 1615, Mary 1616, Sarterit [spelling as given in the register] 1618, Francis 1619, Edward 1621, Roger 1623, Edward 1625 and Mary 1627. Several died in infancy.
