Hammond Witherley

Hammond Witherley (or Wetherley), singer, was buried on 4th October 1717 in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey, aged 63. No gravestone seems to have been inscribed for him. His wife Elizabeth was buried on 16th February 1732 aged 80. They had no children and she left lands in Gloucestershire to her niece Elianor Gough. He was said to be a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal although his name does not appear in their records. The newspaper Wednesday Journal of 9th October records:

Last Friday night the corpse of Esquire Weatherly was carried from his house in Queen Square Westminster and interred in great state in Westminster Abbey. Dr Atterbury, Bishop of Rochester, the Dean, attended by all the choristers, performed the funeral service.
