George Jay

The Reverend Dr George Jay, Dean Designate of Peterborough, was buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey on 5th November 1661, between the monuments of William Camden and Isaac Casaubon. Jay himself has no monument or gravestone.

He was rector of Bugbrooke in Northamptonshire and became a prebendary of Lichfield cathedral in 1632. He "suffered greatly" as a Royalist during the Civil War and Cromwell's time. But he was due to succeed Bishop Cosin as Dean at Peterborough but died before this came into effect. A marriage between a George Jay and Martha Manning was recorded at St Bride's church in London on 2nd April 1649 and this could be him.
