Elizabeth and John Gregory

John Gregory, Westminster Abbey carpenter, was buried in the south cloister of the Abbey on 24th February 1704 aged 47. His wife was Elizabeth Gray and they married in 1687. When John died she took over the running of his business doing work for the Abbey although she was not herself a carpenter. When Sir Christopher Wren was Abbey Surveyor he commissioned a large wooden model of a proposed tower and spire for the Abbey and Elizabeth signed the bills for making this. It can be seen in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries in the Abbey.

She was buried with her husband on 10th December 1719 aged 55. Their gravestone is no longer marked but it was near that of Philip Clark, Abbey plumber. Her son Timothy proved her will. Two sons were buried in the south cloister - John aged 30 on 26th November 1718 and Abraham aged 28 on 8th December 1724. Her daughter Elizabeth married Francis Webb.
