Ann Whytell

Ann Whytell or Whytall was buried in the north aisle of the nave of Westminster Abbey on 22 August 1788. Her sister Elizabeth erected a monument to her. This was originally near the grave but was moved in 1922 to its present position on the window ledge of the south aisle of the nave. The sculptor was John Bacon and the monument is dated 1791. The white marble monument consists of an urn on which are leaning almost life-size figures of Innocence and Peace, one holding a dove and the other an olive branch. On the urn are the uncoloured coat of arms of the family of Whittell of Lancashire "per fess azure and or, a pale counterchanged, over all three lions rampant". The inscription reads:

To the memory of Miss Ann Whytell who died the 17th of August 1788

She was of Gilmonby in Yorkshire. It is not known why she was buried in the Abbey unless she had a residence nearby.
