Andrew Gammell

Lieutenant General Andrew Gammell was buried in the south cloister of Westminster Abbey on 26th October 1815, aged 50. He seems never to have had an inscribed gravestone. He attained the rank of Lt. General in the army in 1813. In his will he bequeathed money to his friend Martha Stageldoir, "named Mrs Gammell". By her he had eight children, Lt. William Gammell, Ensign James Gammell, Jessie, Martha, Mary, Margaret, Andrew and Ernest. Jessie had disgraced herself by marrying a blackguard, he said. His address given in the burial register was Southampton Place, New Road.
