    Politician and Statesman

    George Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, Prime Minister, has a memorial bust in the west aisle of the north transept.

    His life He was a child of George Gordon, Lord Haddo and his wife Charlotte (Baird) and was born in Edinburgh.

  • Susanna Gunning

    Novelist

    Susanna Gunning, novelist, was buried in the north cloister on 5th September 1800 aged 60. She seems never to have had an inscribed gravestone.

    Their only child Elizabeth (1769-1823) married Major J.

  • Dame Sybil Thorndike

    Actor

    Dame Sybil Thorndike, actress, is buried in the south choir aisle. Her ashes were buried on 2nd July 1976. The gravestone was unveiled 23rd October.

    Physician and Doctor

    In the north choir aisle is a memorial to surgeon Lord Lister, pioneer of antiseptic treatment. The white marble roundel shows a profile of Lister.

  • Thomas Clarkson

    Abolitionist

    A memorial of slate was unveiled for Thomas Clarkson, abolitionist, on 26th September 1996, being placed between the statues of William Wilberforce and Stamford Raffles.

    Thomas married Catherine Buck (d.1856) but their only child Thomas died before his father.

  • Arthur, Viscount Lee of Fareham

    Politician, Soldier and Philanthropist

    Arthur Hamilton Lee, Viscount Lee of Fareham was a benefactor to Westminster Abbey. He gave two bronze candelabra and two paintings.

  • Arthur, Baron Tedder

    Airman

    Arthur Tedder, 1st Baron Tedder, is one of the Royal Air Force wartime leaders remembered in the RAF chapel. He was knighted in 1942.

    Arthur was born near Glasgow on 11th July 1890, a child of Sir Arthur Tedder and his wife Charlotte (Bryson).

  • John Harrison

    Scientist

    In 2006 a memorial stone for John Harrison, clock maker and developer of the marine chronometer, was unveiled in the nave.

    John was baptised at Foulby in Yorkshire on 31st March 1693, the eldest child of Henry (d.1728) and his wife Elizabeth (Barber).

  • Sir James Outram

    Soldier

    Sir James Outram, Baronet, is buried in the nave. He was an officer in the East India Company and spent most of his life there.

    Their only child was Francis (1836-1912).

  • Francis Horner

    Politician

    A memorial statue to Francis Horner stands in the west aisle of the north transept of Westminster Abbey. The sculptor was Sir Francis Chantry.

    Francis was born on 12th August 1778, a child of John Horner and his wife Joanna (Baillie).

  • Gerard Manley Hopkins

    Poet and Priest/Minister

    A memorial stone to Gerard Manley Hopkins, poet, was unveiled on 8th December 1975 in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey by the Duke of Norfolk.

    About Gerard Manley Hopkins He was born on 28th July 1844 at Stratford in Essex, a child of Manley Hopkins and his wife Catherine (Smith).

  • Ted Hughes

    Poet

    A memorial to Ted [Edward James] Hughes O.M., O.B.E. was unveiled in Poets' Corner Westminster Abbey on 6th December 2011 by Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney.

    In 1956 he married the American poet Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) and they had two children, Frieda and Nicholas.

    A new icon of St Edward the Confessor has been dedicated and placed in the shrine, the place of his burial, in Westminster Abbey.

    They represent the Mother of God with the Christ Child and Christ himself.
