    Elizabeth Gaskell, whose novel Cranford formed the basis of one of the BBC’s prime-time television drama successes, will be honoured with a memorial in a window panel in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey.

    Westminster Abbey celebrated the life of St Edward the Confessor at a National Pilgrimage on Saturday 19th October 2013.

    St Edward, who was King of England between 1042 and 1066, rebuilt and greatly enriched Westminster Abbey turning it into a national institution.

    Buckingham Palace has announced that the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II will be held at Westminster Abbey at 11am on Monday 19th September.

    The last funeral of a monarch to be held at the Abbey was that of King George II in 1760.

    The Emir of the State of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, accompanied by Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, visited Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 27th October 2010 during a State Visit to Her Majesty The Queen.

  • New Tower for Westminster Abbey

    Westminster Abbey has been granted planning permission by Westminster City Council to build a new stair and lift tower at the east end of the church. The tower will enable public access for the first time to the Abbey's eastern Triforium, an elevated internal gallery, which is to be transformed into a new museum and exhibition space: The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries. This will be the most significant addition to the building since Nicholas Hawksmoor's iconic west towers were completed in 1745.

    The new tower has been designed in sympathy with the Gothic style of the Abbey by Ptolemy Dean, the Abbey's Surveyor of the Fabric (Consultant Architect).
