  • Abbey to light up red for 25th anniversary of Modern Martyrs

    The Abbey’s west front will be floodlit in blood red as the sun goes down on the evening of Saturday 8th July to mark the eve of the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the modern martyrs.

    Dr Roger Tonge was buried in St Margaret's church Westminster in 1549 but he has no marker.

    Abbot and Priest/Minister

    Ralph Arundel was Abbot of Westminster from 1200 to 1214. He was buried in the nave of the old Norman Abbey which was later demolished.

    The Reverend Dr William Loe, alias Leo, was buried in Poets' Corner Westminster Abbey, near the entrance to St Faith's chapel on 21st September 1645.

    The Reverend Michael Evans was a Canon and Sub Dean of Westminster from 1702-1732 and was buried in the nave in August 1732.

    Writer, Poet and Priest/Minister

    The Reverend Richard James, antiquary, historian, linguist and poet, was buried in St Margaret's Church Westminster on 8th December 1638 but he has no marker or memorial.

    Reverend Dr James Hawkey has been appointed to the Canonry of Westminster to be made vacant through the retirement of the Reverend Professor Vernon White.

    Priest/Minister and Philanthropist

    Robert South, prebendary of Westminster, is buried in the lantern area, just before the steps up to the Cosmati pavement and next to Richard Busby.

  • Thomas Bilson

    Priest/Minister and Writer

    Thomas Bilson, bishop of Winchester, is buried in the south ambulatory. The plate over his grave has been moved against the wall for better preservation.

  • Stephen Marshall

    Priest/Minister

    Stephen Marshall, clergyman, was buried in the south transept in November 1655 but his body was exhumed, together with other followers of Cromwell, in 1661.

  • William Twisse

    Priest/Minister

    In the south transept of Westminster Abbey is a grey fossil marble tablet to William Twisse, preacher in the Cromwellian period, and three others.

  • Robert Henry Charles

    Priest/Minister

    Dr Robert Henry Charles was Canon of Westminster from 1913 and Archdeacon from 1919 and is buried with his wife in the north cloister.

  • Eric Symes Abbott

    Dean and Priest/Minister

    The ashes of former Dean of Westminster Eric Symes Abbott are buried in the nave near the altar there, with a portland stone tablet.

  • St Oscar Romero

    Priest/Minister

    A statue to Oscar Romero, modern martyr and saint, was unveiled in July 1998 and stands above the west entrance to Westminster Abbey. Sculptor John Roberts.

  • Frederic and Cyril Farrar

    Writer and Priest/Minister

    The Reverend Frederic William Farrar and his son Cyril Lytton Farrar have memorials in St Margaret's church Westminster. Frederic was Rector at the church from 1876.
