• George I

  George I was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 20th October 1714. He could not speak much English and the ceremonies were mostly conducted in Latin.

  John Coleman was buried in the north cloister and has a plain marble tablet. Catherine Coleman, presumed to be his widow, was buried near him.

  General James Johnston is buried in the centre part of the nave. Only a small stone now marks his grave, near that of Thomas Telford.

  Sir Henry Spelman, antiquary, historian and author, was buried in the south ambulatory. He was born in Norfolk in 1563/1564, son of Henry and Frances.

  Major General Lowther and his mother Mary are buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey but have no marker.

  Eleanor Verney, wife of George Bowes, was buried in the Duke of Ormond's vault in Westminster Abbey.

  Nicholas Leke, 2nd Earl of Scarsdale and his son Robert are buried in the vault of Baron Hunsdon in St John the Baptist's chapel.

  Near the west door of Westminster Abbey is a statue to politician and philanthropist Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. It was unveiled in 1888

  Statesman

  Henry John Temple, Viscount Palmerston, Prime Minister, is buried with his wife in the north transept. There is an over life-size statue of him nearby.
