  St Margaret’s Church, affectionately known as the ‘parish church of the House of Commons’, and the church where Winston Churchill married his beloved Clemmie in September 1908 has launched a £2 million appeal to fund essential works to repair its roof, external walls and bell tower.

• Sir Charles Stuart

  Soldier

  A white marble memorial to army officer Sir Charles Stuart is on the wall of St Andrew's chapel, off the north transept of Westminster Abbey.

• Sir Thomas Hardy

  Sailor

  At the west end of the nave is a monument to Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy. He is shown in Roman armour reclining on a sarcophagus.

• James Wolfe

  Soldier

  James Wolfe, famous soldier, is buried at Greenwich but he has a large memorial in Westminster Abbey.

  The ashes of Dr Edward Frederick Carpenter K.C.V.O., a much loved Dean of Westminster, are buried in the nave near the graves of his predecessors.

  Sir John Puckering, Speaker of the House of Commons, is buried in St Paul's chapel. His large monument shows effigies of him and his wife.

  In the north transept is a memorial stone to six soldiers, including General Sir Henry Barnard, who served and died in the Indian Mutiny.

  In the west cloister is a white marble monument and bust to the memory of lawyer Arthur O'Keeffe. It was erected in the late 1750s.

  A large white marble monument to Elizabeth, Duchess of Northumberland stands in this chapel. This was designed by Robert Adam and sculpted by Nicholas Read.

  In the nave, within the choir screen, is a large monument to James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope. Inscriptions to later Stanhope's have been added.

  Philanthropist

  Mildred Cecil, Lady Burghley and her daughter Anne Vere, Countess of Oxford have a large monument in St Nicholas' chapel. Richard Cecil, Lord Burghley's father, is buried in St Margaret's Church.
