  • Charles St Clare Bedford

    Charles St Clare Bedford, Chapter Clerk at Westminster Abbey 1854-1900 and Coroner for the City of Westminster 1845-1888, is buried in the north cloister.

    Their child Emma was baptised in the Abbey in 1866.

  • Samuel Horsley

    Dean

    Samuel Horsley was Dean of Westminster from 1793-1802 but he has no memorial in the Abbey. His portrait hangs in the Deanery.

    The Reverend Heneage Horsley (who married Frances Bourke) was his child by Mary.

  • Richard Cobden

    Statesman

    Cobden, statesman and champion of free trade, has a memorial in the west aisle of the north transept. Dickens signed the petition for erecting it.

    He was born in Sussex, a child of William Cobden and his wife Millicent (Amber).

  • Elizabeth, Countess of Desmond

    Elizabeth Butler, Countess of Desmond was buried in St Paul's chapel in Westminster Abbey in 1629 but she has no marker. Her father's first wife Elizabeth Berkeley is also buried in this chapel.

    was the only surviving child of Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond and 3rd Earl of Ossory by his second wife Elizabeth (daughter of John 2nd Lord Sheffield).

    Thomas Gassaway was a carpenter in Westminster and was buried in St Margaret's church on 19th November 1658. He has no remaining gravestone or monument.

  • Sir Thomas Nevill

    In the north transept of Westminster Abbey are the graves of Sir Thomas Nevill and his wife Sarah, and their daughter Anne Elford.

    Anne was their only child and her husband Jonathan (1684-1755) was Member of Parliament for Saltash and was buried in Devon.

  • John and Eleanor Elliott

    Philanthropist

    In St Margaret's church is an area known as the Chapel of Christ the Intercessor, set up in 1981 by John and Eleanor Elliott.

    John (Jock) Elliott was born in Manhattan on 25th January 1921, a child of John and Audrey Elliott and died in 2005.

  • Adam Lindsay Gordon

    Poet

    A memorial bust of the "poet of Australia", Adam Lindsay Gordon, was unveiled on 11th May 1934 in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey.

    In 1862 he married Margaret Park (d.1919) but their only child Annie died in infancy.

  • Elizabeth Woodfall

    Elizabeth, daughter of printer Henry Sampson Woodfall, was buried in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey. Her tablet no longer remains.

    She was the youngest child of the celebrated printer of "Junius" Henry Sampson Woodfall (1739-1805) and his wife Elizabeth.

  • Abbey mourns The Duchess of Kent

    Prayers are being said in Westminster Abbey for The Duchess of Kent and for her family, following her death at the age of 92.

    In 2004 she founded a charity, Future Talent, aiming to give every child an equal opportunity to excel in music.

  • Abbey finds rare 17th century manuscript in tin trunk

    The manuscript, thought to date from 1603-1604, is a copy of Donne’s The Courtier’s Library, a satirical attack on corruptions in the church and establishment: rather like a 17th century version of Private Eye.

    Donne went onto have a happily married life with Anne though he was bereft when she died in 1617 after the stillbirth of their twelfth child.

    Henry VI was crowned in Westminster Abbey in 1429 aged 8. He has a modern statue in the Lady Chapel.

    Henry was the only child of Henry V and Catherine de Valois and was born at Windsor Castle on 6th December 1421.
