• Sir James Wright

  Diplomat

  On 28th November 1785 Sir James Wright was buried in the north transept of Westminster Abbey. The inscription on his gravestone is now rather faint.

• Samuel Taylor Coleridge

  Poet

  In Poets' Corner is a bust in memory of poet and critic Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It was presented to the Abbey by Dr Mercer.

• Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

  Poet

  The over life-size marble bust of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was unveiled in 1884, on a pillar near to the tomb of Geoffrey Chaucer.

• Sir John Jennings

  Sailor

  Rear Admiral Sir John Jennings was buried in the centre part of the north transept, but his gravestone inscription has now worn away.

• Princess Royal and Chilean Navy honour Lord Cochrane

  Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal joined representatives of the Chilean Navy at Westminster Abbey on Tuesday 22nd May 2012 for the annual wreath laying ceremony to honour Admiral Lord Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, on Chilean Naval Day.

• Abbey brings Christian leaders together to celebrate Pentecost

• Sir Walter Raleigh

  Writer, Poet, Explorer and Soldier

  Sir Walter Raleigh, explorer, courtier, writer and poet, is buried in St Margaret's Church. There is a memorial tablet and stained glass window to him.

• George Montagu Dunk, Earl of Halifax

  Politician

  In the west aisle of the north transept is a memorial for George Montagu Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax, politician. The monument is of marble.

• New Tower for Westminster Abbey

  Westminster Abbey has been granted planning permission by Westminster City Council to build a new stair and lift tower at the east end of the church. The tower will enable public access for the first time to the Abbey's eastern Triforium, an elevated internal gallery, which is to be transformed into a new museum and exhibition space: The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries. This will be the most significant addition to the building since Nicholas Hawksmoor's iconic west towers were completed in 1745.

• George III

  George III and Queen Charlotte were crowned in the Abbey on 22nd September 1761. The ceremony was long and they were not crowned until 3.30pm.

• Robert Lowe, Viscount Sherbrooke

  Politician

  Politician Robert Lowe (Viscount Sherbrooke) has a bust in the eastern porch of St Margaret's Church Westminster. He was born at Bingham, Nottinghamshire in 1811.

• William Bayne

  In the north transept is a tall monument of white and coloured marbles, known as The Three Captains memorial, by the sculptor Joseph Nollekens.

• Elizabeth Herrick

  In St Margaret's is a modern painted wooden tablet to Elizabeth Herrick, which replaced one which had disappeared from the church in the 18th century.

• Charles Holmes

  In the north ambulatory is a large monument of grey and white marble to Rear Admiral Charles Holmes. This shows the admiral in Roman armour.

• Victoria & George Cross Holders

  In the nave is a joint memorial stone to holders of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry, and holders of the George Cross.

• William Wragg

  In the south choir aisle is a memorial to William Wragg. The inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of William Wragg Esqr. of South Carolina.

• George Herbert

  Poet

  In St George's chapel in Westminster Abbey is a two light stained glass window to the memory of poets George Herbert and William Cowper.

• George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston

  Writer and Statesman

  A memorial to George Nathaniel, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, K.G., GCSI, GCIE, statesman and writer, was unveiled in Henry VII's chapel in 1930.
