• Westminster Abbey discovers link with Charlemagne

  A medieval silk seal bag dating from the reign of King Henry III has gone on public display for the first time in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries at Westminster Abbey following the discovery by scholars that it is a perfect match to the silk cloth used to wrap the remains of the Emperor Charlemagne who is buried in Aachen Cathedral in Germany.

  In the nave of Westminster Abbey is the grave and monument to Major John André, executed as a spy by the Americans in 1780.

• John Islip

  John Islip was Abbot of Westminster from 1500 until his death in 1532 and was buried in the chantry chapel he built at Westminster Abbey.

• Unknown Warrior

  At the west end of the Nave is the grave of the Unknown Warrior, whose body was brought from France to be buried in 1920. No one knows the identity of the person buried here. It is the only gravestone in the Abbey that we ask people not to walk on out of respect.

  In St Margaret's Church Westminster is a large monument to Sir Peter Parker who died fighting in America on 30th August 1814.

  Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox, was buried, at the expense of Elizabeth I, in the south aisle of Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey.

  Her Majesty The Queen visited Westminster Abbey on Thursday 3rd October to see the site of The King Charles III Sacristy where building work will begin early next year to transform the welcome the Abbey offers the millions of people who come from around the world to enjoy one of the world’s great churches.

• Oliver Cromwell and Family

  Soldier and Politician

  Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector, was buried in Westminster Abbey following his death in 1658. However, he was exhumed after the Restoration.

• Charles II

  Charles' coronation took place on 23rd April 1661. He was buried in the Abbey on 14th February 1685 in a vault in Henry VII's chapel.

• Charles Darwin

  Scientist and Writer

  Charles Robert Darwin, naturalist, is buried in the north aisle of the nave of Westminster Abbey, not far from Sir Isaac Newton. His memorial is by J.E. Boehm.

  On the north wall of St Margaret's church Westminster is a damaged and blackened monument and bust to philanthropist and priest James Palmer.

• Horatio, Viscount Nelson

  Sailor

  One of the best likenesses of the great Admiral, Horatio, Viscount Nelson, is his wax effigy in the triforium galleries at Westminster Abbey.

  In St Margaret's church Westminster is a monument to Lady Dorothy Stafford, lady of the bedchamber to Elizabeth I. She and her son Sir Edward Stafford are buried in the church.

  James Turle was Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey from 1831-1882. He has a memorial tablet in the cloisters and a memorial window in the Abbey but is not buried here.

  In the west aisle of the north transept is a very large white marble monument to the memory of Lt. General Sir Eyre Coote.
