• Poets of the First World War

  Poet and Soldier

  Sixteen poets of the Great War (World War I) are remembered on this memorial. None of the poets are actually buried in the Abbey.

• William Shakespeare

  Playwright

  Shakespeare was buried at Stratford upon Avon in 1616 and it was not until 1741 that a statue to him was erected in Poets' Corner.

• Elizabeth Corbett and Mildred Hotham

  On the north wall of St Margaret's is a tablet to Elizabeth Corbett and Lady Mildred Hotham. The epitaph verses were composed by Alexander Pope.

• Peter Birch

  Priest/Minister

  Peter Birch, clergyman, and his wife Martha are buried in the south transept. Martha has a white marble Baroque wall tablet near Chaucer's tomb.

• Thomas Campbell

  Writer and Poet

  Poet and writer Thomas Campbell is buried in Poets' Corner. He has a life sized marble statue near Shakespeare's memorial, by sculptor W. Calder Marshall.

  Architect

  In the south transept of Westminster Abbey is the grave of the celebrated Scottish architect Robert Adam. The stone was re-cut in 1974.

  The poet, writer and dramatist Aphra (Astrea or Aphara) Behn (1640?-1689) was buried in the east cloister, near the steps up into the church.

  Statesman and Abolitionist

  Zachary Macaulay has a life size bust in the nave. He was a member of the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade.

  Physician and Doctor

  A life sized marble bust of physician Matthew Baillie is in St Andrew's chapel. It is by sculptor Sir Francis Chantrey and is dated 1827.

• Alexander Pope

  Writer and Poet

  A memorial to poet and critic Alexander Pope was inserted in the stained glass window in Poets' Corner and was unveiled on 7th June 1994.

• Elizabeth Herrick

  In St Margaret's is a modern painted wooden tablet to Elizabeth Herrick, which replaced one which had disappeared from the church in the 18th century.

• Wystan Hugh Auden

  Writer and Poet

  A memorial stone for W.H. Auden, poet and essayist, was unveiled in Poets' Corner Westminster Abbey on 2nd October 1974.

• Hugh Arnold-Forster

  Writer, Politician, Statesman and Lawyer

  On the south wall of St Margaret's is a tablet, with a head in relief, to the memory of Hugh Arnold-Forster, politician, lawyer and author.

  A white marble bust to theologian and Christian socialist Frederick Denison Maurice stood for many years on the west window sill of St George's chapel.

  In St George's chapel in Westminster Abbey is a two light stained glass window to the memory of poets George Herbert and William Cowper.

  Scientist and Engineer

  In St Margaret's Church is a tablet in memory of James Rumsey, West Virginia, inventor, who was buried in the churchyard on 24th December 1792.

  A memorial to playwright and poet Christopher Marlowe was unveiled in 2002 in the new window, by Graham Jones, in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey.

  Soldier

  Richard (Rich) Ingram, 5th Viscount Irvine (or Irwin) was buried in a vault at the east end of Henry VII's chapel on 17th April 1721.

  On a pillar on the west wall of Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey is a white marble bust to poet and clergyman John Keble.
