First definitive history of the Abbey published

A definitive history book of Westminster Abbey was launched last night to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Henry III’s rebuilding of the church.

In the centre part of the south transept is a gravestone to William Burnaby, dramatist. The Reform'd Wife was staged at Drury Lane in 1700.

Hugh Holland, poet and writer, was buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey, near St Benedict's chapel, on 23rd July 1633.

Dame Mary Steele, second wife of politician and writer Sir Richard Steele, is buried in the south transept. Her gravestone inscription is now very worn.

Dr Richard Lucas is buried in the south transept. In 1677 he published the first of many works, Practical Christianity, and was a noted preacher.
